Created mainly for friends and family, the distinctive lettering art of David Jones is based on naive letterforms and early christian inscriptions. This workshop explores these characteristic and quirky letterforms, looks at their origins for inspiration, and their ‘Jones’ arrangements, using either pencils, or crayons, or gouache, (or all three) to create these and some new forms of our own. During this two day workshop we will explore a variety of ways of adding gold leaf to a design, using both simple and more challenging techniques. Starting with the application of gold leaf flat to the page using a variety of traditional and modern gilding sizes, we will progress to reconstituting and laying manuscript gesso, gilding with loose leaf gold and burnishing to a high shine.
