CLAS Specialist Skills Awards

CLAS Specialist Skills Awards (now replacing the previous Certificate of Skills).

Teurer Viktor by Margeret Morgan

These inspiring courses present a progression from the basics of calligraphy and related arts, offering intensive, good quality tuition in specialist subject areas – giving high-level learning opportunities.  The tutors, provided by CLAS, are generally Accredited tutors or teaching Fellows and the courses consist of 24 hours of tuition and feedback in total.  Each course generally spreads across one year, giving time for work to be created in between sessions.  Submission of work achieved for Award assessment is optional, not compulsory, but if a candidate is successful in attaining the Award, a certificate will be presented by CLAS at its following AGM.

SLLA has been organising such in-person courses for many years, with Heraldry, Copperplate and Gilding proving to be especially popular.  The four in-person sessions are held at a central London venue, usually between October and June, with work for Award assessment due to be submitted by late autumn.

For 2023/24, the new Design for Calligraphers course – Part One:  Exploration of Space with Margaret Morgan is under way.  Margaret describes her course as ‘design for calligraphers – raising awareness of a missing skill’ and goes on to state, “In teaching calligraphy and allied skills over twenty years, it’s been obvious to me that design has always been the Cinderella of the calligraphic world.  It’s often overlooked, not properly understood, frequently thought of as difficult or unimportant – but knowing how to combine all aspects of the calligraphic craft and place them effectively within a given space is crucial.”
