Say it in Styles with David Simons

Now into our third lockdown, and I am sure everyone is as fed up with it as I am, but there are still things going on at SLLA.

On Saturday 23 January we had our first workshop of 2021 – Say it in Styles with David Simons.  Because of the ongoing Covid problems the workshop had to be online via Zoom but we had a good turnout and everyone managed to log in and get online for 10.00.  We had two hours in the morning, two hour break over lunchtime and then two hours in the afternoon. Demonstrations from David and time for everyone to try the different lettering styles for themselves.  To break the day up, David had devised some clever games – some rounds were easier than others!  At the end of the day, our Treasurer Eva proved she was a real whizz at this kind of quiz and got the most points, winning herself a virtual cup of tea and a cake, courtesy of David.  It was a fun day and thank you David for making it possible.

I think we all miss the interaction with one another that you get from going to a ‘proper’ workshop.  No opportunities to chat and catch up over lunch but lots of waving to one another on-screen and it’s good to see that we are sometimes joined by members of other calligraphy societies – it was lovely to see Joy Daniels taking part in David’s workshop.

The committee are still planning for future events and adjusting arrangements as they go in order to comply with current Covid rules.  Do keep an eye on the SLLA website to see what is coming up in the future.  Meanwhile, if you are looking for a calligraphy project to work on, don’t forget you can take part in Postcard from Lockdown – see latest Inc for details.

Let’s hope that, maybe later this year, we will all be able to meet up again for social evenings and workshops.  Until then, stay well and stay safe.
