The Sacred Lettering of Tibet with Lama Rigzin

Lama Rigzin came all the way from his monastery in Tibet to say “Tashi Deleg” — a special Tibetan greeting — to the SLLA group when he came to give a lecture on Traditional Tibetan Art and Early Contemporary Script Styles. Professor Karen Littleton was also present to translate but Lama Rigzin delivered his lecture in English with great effect and humour. He has a huge knowledge of Tibetan religious art and scripts and has spent many years studying religious painting travelling to many monasteries. In particular, he talked of studying with his teacher Sonam Nyima in Tibet between 2009-2012.

Into the box – Wood engraving today

The South London Lettering Association’s first social evening talk for 2017 was from Peter S. Wood. He originally trained as a painter and printer, taught in secondary schools for 40 years including teaching lino cutting, and for the last 3 years has had a studio at St Brides teaching wood engraving. Peter gave a short history of wood engraving and showed some illustrations from William Blake and the Boys Own paper, and told us that in the early days, the picture would be drawn by the artist and then passed on to the engraver.
